DESCRIPTION OF CONTENTS:

The idea of this study was launched by Mr. Edmond McLoughne, UNICEF representative in Romania, while while in a monitoring visit in one of the schools participating in the campaign about the school participation. Bearing in mind the fact that there are different practices and policies of registering the children who abandon school and that the current regulations and methodologies are not sufficiently consistent and clarified, a question shall be raised: in what measure can a systematic analysis of this phenomenon be carried out?

Thus, this research was initiates as an attempt to answer this question and to analyze the school dropout phenomenon through another method than the one used (known as the entry-exit method) based on the data from the beginning and the end of the school year which are transmitted annually to the competent authorities. For this purpose, it was used the method of the analysis of the academic failures (including school dropout and grade retention) taking into account the evolution of students’ participation in education for a whole course of study, using information about each student belonging to the analyzed schools/classes.

By evaluating the dimension of the school dropout phenomenon in the selected education units was possible by making a comparative analysis of the information provided by the schools and that about the school drop out at a national level.

COMMENTS ON THIS PUBLICATION:

This study reflects the special interest in the situation of the students at risk of school dropout or the children an youth who have already left the education system. We think that a faithful image of the actual situation can help us to gain a better understanding of the appropriate ways of intervention, for national, regional or local policies and measures. We believe that this study is a step ahead in this direction.
