DESCRIPTION OF CONTENTS:

This work confronts the latest research on early school leaving while questioning prejudices and collective representations according to which the phenomenon takes its roots primarily in family failure or personal deficiencies. While addressing those factors, the author also considers the problem from the angle of the school effect and school violence, themes that have been rarely addressed so far.

Beyond mere simplification, this book presents a typology of young people at risk of early school leaving in France, based on qualitative and quantitative research. Although early school leaving is more widespread in disadvantaged backgrounds, the research shows that a certain number of students from a (very) disadvantaged background, and others with average school results are in a situation of school leaving without receiving the attention they need.

COMMENTS ON THIS PUBLICATION:

This work proposes an interdisciplinary and international approach, for a more subtle vision and a better understanding of the phenomenon. It presents, from a critical point of view, concrete intervention programmes. It is addressed to education professionals, social workers, students in social science and educational research, as well as to families and everyone who feels concerned by social issues.
