Today, the National Educational Welfare Board (NEWB) works with both the school and the home to ensure that those experiencing difficulty and in danger of leaving school early, especially as manifested by school absenteeism, are supported and encouraged to continue with their education.
This report, tells the story of three projects that have survived the Pilot phase in anticipation of dovetailing into the emerging strategy for early school leavers
The purpose of this report is threefold:
I. To identify where and how Pathways fits in to the framework of supports available to Early School Leavers (ESLs) in the three Pathways sites of Kildare, Tralee and Waterford.
II. To identify what critical differences Pathways makes in the lives of ESLs in those areas and how Pathways achieves these differences.
III. To present a case for the mainstreaming of the Pathways initiative and the development of further Pathways sites.
These key goals of the report have been carried out in a systematic manner. The current landscape of the problem is outlined, the Pathways Model of response is summarised and followed by recommendations towards further development
