ACTIVITIES REPORT
Partners' Institution:
Wilsthorpe Business and Enterprise College
Project's period (from/to):
January 2008 - April 2008
WPs concerned:
WP 1 - Collection of Information and Production of Reports

Objectives of activities carried out:
1. Production of a 'National Report'
2. Creation of a national work group
3. Analysis of the situation in the UK in respect of school 'drop-outs'
4. Undertake five 'Case Studies' to link 'real life' experiences with
published articles on the subject of school 'drop outs'

Time period:
January 2008 - April 2008

Description of activities carried out:
1) Identification of the most appropriate Public Officers,
Head Teachers,Teachers and organisations to work with on the
project

2) Identification of suitable 'Case Studies' ensuring that all parties
were willing to participate i.e. teacher, parent and young person

3) Internet research for information about the 'National Situation'

4) Internet research for information to compare the 'National
Situation' with the position elsewhere in Europe

5) Interviews with teachers, parents and students for 'Case Studies'
using the format agreed by CIPAT

6) Interviews with Head Teachers and Public Officers, including local
politicians with a responsibility for education and permanently
appointed officers in Local Government - using the agreed questions

7) Following up areas of interest, relevant to the 'National
Situation' report, identified during interviews

8) Writing the National Report, including 'Case Study' details, in the
agreed format

Outcomes:
1. Production of the 'National Situation' report

2. 24 interviews with different target groups

3. Identification of useful and relevant contacts for next stages of
the project

4. Unfortunately I have not been able to set up a formal National Work
Group willing to meet and work on as a team throughout the project.
However our college 'Core Team'(Head Teacher, Deputy Head Teacher,
3 x Assistant Head Teachers, College Business Manager) will form
the basis of our Work Group and we will liaise with 'Public
Officers' and representatives of other organisations working in the
field, as and when necessary. At the same time, if the opportunity
does arise to set up a wider working group as the project
progresses, then this will be followed up

5. Only limited statistical information was available about the
problem in the UK and not in the format of 'school drop outs' but
rather on 'school attendance' or young people who are NEET (Not in
Education, Employment or Training)

6. No statistical information has been sourced to compare the position
in the UK with other European Countries.

Evaluation of the work undertaken:
Our inability to persuade Public Officers to co-operate and join a work group is disappointing.

Another difficulty was persuading suitable young people and their parents to participate in the 'Case Studies' - these are not people who are inclined to help or work with their school.

The final 'National Situation' report has been quite widely circulated amongst senior staff in the college and has been well received as a useful and interesting document - one member of staff even suggested it should be published.

Useful contacts and sources of reference have been identified and these will be helpful in future project activities.
