During 1999/2000 at the request of the Secretary of State and Education, Ofsted inspected 10 secondary schools with a specific focus on truancy and exclusion. Short visits were made to 80 other secondary schools where truancy and exclusion were above the national average.

This report is based on the findings of the inspections and visits and analyses the actions taken by schools to address these serious problems and to establish how the actions relate to other areas of school improvement.

Although now becoming a little dated, this report still has something to offer and is written in a a very readable style.

The main findings of the survey cover the management of improvement; action on attendance; action on behaviour; teaching the curriculum and support for pupils.
