Description of the organization Wilsthorpe Business &Enterprise College is a United Kingdom secondary school, located on the outskirts of Long Eaton, about 5 miles from Nottingham and close to the M1 and East Midlands Airport. The school has been established for over 50 years and is set on a very pleasant campus which we share with Harrington Junior School and Parklands Primary school.

We currently have 950 students aged 11-18 and an intake that covers the full ability range from potential 'Oxbridge' candidates to students with serious learning difficulties.

We have approximately 75 teaching staff and a similar number of 'support' staff and our vision is to empower all our students to achieve their full potential, to develop a lifelong love of learning and to become responsible, tolerant and enterprising citizens in a constantly changing world.

Wilsthorpe achieved 'Specialist' status in September 2005 and changed its name from Wilsthorpe Community School to 'Wilsthorpe Business &Enterprise College' to reflect the specialism.

An emphasis on skills for business and the world of work generally permeates all aspects of the College, both in the taught curriculum and beyond the classroom. So do the enterprise skills which are not just about becoming entrepreneurs but which are skills that will enable students to be successful in their private and leisure life as well as in paid work. The college has recently established exchange links with Ananda College in Columbo, Sri Lanka. This is the premier Buddhist boys school in Sri Lanka with a current student population of over 6,000 from kindergarten to GCE Advanced level.
Experience in previous projects Wilsthorpe's previous experience of European projects is unfortunately limited to only one previous project: Art Net, which is a European Network for the sharing of Art Teaching materials. For further information see

However what we lack in experience we make up for in enthusiasm and we are keen for further involvement in European projects.
Contact person's experience Roger Murfin is Business Manager at the college and moved to working in education from the world of finance, having worked for almost 30 years for Barclays Bank PLC, where he held a number of managerial roles.

As well as being a member of the Chartered Institute of Bankers, Roger has an Open University Degree and in 2005 obtained the 'Diploma of School Business Management' and then became a 'Member of the Institute of Administrative Management'.

He has now worked in education as a school Business Manager for over 10 years, the last seven being at Wilsthorpe. He is a member of the college 'Core Management Team' and his main responsibilities involve overseeing the college finances, acting as Line Manager for many of the college 'Support Staff', overseeing new premises projects, premises maintenance and co-ordinating Health &Safety at the college.

Roger also has some responsibility for fundraising and attended a training course for European Fundraising at Pixel, in Florence, in 2006 In his private life Roger is a Magistrate, and has served in this role on the 'Nottingham Bench' since 1991.
