This report presents the findings of the 2004 School Leavers’ Survey carried out by the ESRI for the Department of Education and Science
It examines the economic status of school leavers, educational attainment, gender, social class, and also longer-term trends. It discusses educational attainment and labour market success, employment experiences of school leavers to include distributions by industrial sector, occupation, and earnings. The issue of early school leaving is explored, the take up of Transition Year and participation in Post Leaving Certificate courses.
Throughout the years, the school leavers’ survey has shown that males exhibit a greater tendency towards early school leaving than their female counterparts. This survey – the latest conducted – indicates that 3.9 per cent of males as compared to 3.4 per cent of females left school without any qualifications.
