The minor facing a scholastic failure

This article analyses the uneasiness felt by students that have not reached their majority and in particular those who choose or have to leave school before ending their cycle of studies. The author worries about the urgency of the scholastic dropout problem, which still today, in the third millennium, affects the Italian country and its south regions in particular. She analyses the causes for this phenomenon and the essential role that families play in the relationship between the child and the school. In this connection the author points out the two different situations that come out from parents in relation with the school and the children at risk of dropping out: in the first case school is seen as a foreign, or in some cases hostile place with respect to the values and the culture that have been taught in the family; in the second case it prevails the logic of making the family and the student feel guilty, who are considered as “losers”. This leads to anxieties and misunderstandings that do not allow the child to rise up from the difficulties he is troubling with. Regarding the tools available to the society to tackle this problem, the author underlines the importance of giving help to the families facing the same problem, so that they can restore the affective and educational codes that have been latent for long time. The school plays its role as well: the teachers should not show higher and higher aspiration on the students’ performances, but they have to understand their abilities and limits, allowing them to express themselves.
The present article carefully deals with the theme of the scholastic dropout from the point of view of the children and the families facing this dramatic situation. The psychological profile of underage students that decide or are obliged to early leave school is drawn with patience and attention, so it gives the idea of the uneasiness that these students feel and that expands to their families. The analysis made by the author on the triangular relationship between families, children and schools is really interesting. In this regard the possibility of a clash between these actors is surely an important explicative factor that justifies the weak comprehension existing between children and school. This can lead to the scholastic dropout. In the end, according to the author, the interior dimension of the minors has to be safeguarded both by the family and the teachers: children should not be punished because of their limits, on the contrary they should be understood in their capacities, that they have to nurture also with an external and professional support (from the teacher for example). The analysis’ perspectives of the early school leaving problem presented by the author in this article allow the reader to come closer to the core of the argument: the child at risk of dropping out have to be the center of the analysis and the world surrounding him (first of all the family) need a primary support. The school has an active role in interpreting the behaviors and the needs of students in order to implement selective didactic actions.

Stay@School at the Future of Education Conference
The Stay@School projet will be presented at the third edition of the “Future of Education” international conference, held in Florence, Italy, on 13 - 14 June 2013. Over 250 participants from all over the world will attend the conference. The conference participants belong to the sectors of higher education, school education, vocational education and training as well as adult education, therefore representing all of the target groups of the Stay@School project.
